I don’t like having my scanner broken! But I promise, if you want to see the pretty art for the games I talk about, the links have them!
anyhoo, there are a couple new games announced this week from Otomate and D3P.
The first, Natsuzora no Monologue, is set for the PS2, seems somewhat like a light novel, in the example screens the text covers most of the space available. This makes me less interested in it, as I’m not a fan of light novels, although I guess this has voice and character pics too so it’s not like a regular light novel.
It’s based on a time loop, and set in a town near the sea. The heroine’s name is Ogawa Aoi, and she has amnesia. She joined the chemistry club at school, but it’s being cancelled.
July 29 is the day before it’s supposed to be disbanded, but on that day, she hears sound from a 30-year-old skyscraper in town called ‘Tree’ (the description says the building sings), and the time loop begins. One major decision is that you can choose to escape the time loop, or stay in it.
This setup reminds me of Sorayume’s final route, it will be interesting to see how they treat it.
D3′s new title, Ishin Renka Ryouma Gaiden seems like it might be an alternate history from its Bakumatsu Renka titles, which were great but (since they followed known history closely) could be somewhat…depressing (yes, I cried sometimes, it was sad!!). It seems the story is based on Sakamoto Ryouma. The platform and dates are still a mystery.
C’est tout for tonight! I’ve been busy with other stuff, but I have some posts in draft about the new Moujuutsukai game, and I think I should edit and re-publish what I wrote a million years ago about Mizu no Senritsu 2….

Oh, Mizu no Senritsu~ I remember that game. I have the first one.
On another note, yes, I’m not the only one who cried during Bakumatsu Renka XD
Oooh, I’d definitely be interested in any info about Mizu no Senritsu 2. The heroine looks pretty badass, which is a huge plus, but I can’t seem to track down anyone writing about it in English. (Playing Sangokuren Senki right now, and have realised I’ve been really spoiled as far as main characters go by playing HaruToki3 as my first otome game. :/ Man, I should finish those…)
Not sure if you’ve heard this or not, but there’s to be a Hakuouki anime adaptation this coming season. (Never played the games, but I may end up trying them someday when I have money…)
(Kind of random question you don’t have to answer: do you know of any other otome games with a historical and/or fantasy bent in which the heroine is awesome?)
Yes, playing Harutoki 3 as your first otome game might put your standards pretty high, lol. Have you tried Harutoki 4? It got mixed reviews, but personally I loved it even though there are some definite flaws – for me all would be fixed if they would release a big fandisk filling in backstory and extending the scenes!
I actually had heard about the Hakuouki anime – but I think I’ll try not to watch it until I get the game.
Other good historical/fantasy heroines, hmm…have you played any of the Quinrose games? Alice, Crimson Empire, Arabian’s Lost. Lots of strong heroines from them. Houkago wa Gin no Shirabe had a heroine expert in kendou and exorcism (not as much romance there). There’s also Kanuchi (I like both heroines), and Kazeiro Surf (a female mechanic in an alternate universe WWI). And of course Hi no Kioku Mizu no Senritsu 2.
Mmmmm, no I’ve not played any of the Quinrose games, though I’ve been intrigued by all the good reviews I’ve seen. (Snarky protagonist is win.) Maybe now that some of them are on the portable consoles I can play them…
I’m not terribly good friends with the Wii, and I lack a Japanese PS2, so unfortunately playing HaruToki4 is out of the question. :/ Sounds very good, though. I really like the dating-sim fantasy RPG hybrids, as I generally find straight visual novels kind of boring.
I keep hoping Houkago will be re-released on the PSP or something. The setting and characters sound pretty neat, honestly.
Thanks so much for your recommendations!
I look forward to the Mizu no Senritsu 2 post. I now have games to look forward to purchasing at some point… when I have monies. (Man, March was ridiculous for all the games released…)
